BASICS - The structure of a Magic card

Magic: The Gathering is more than just nice illustrations and epic names . Each card has An clear structure with fixed parts . Once you recognize them , the game immediately An piece clearer . Whether you have a Serra Angel plays , a Lightning Bolt swings or a mighty planeswalker calls : all cards to follow the same framework . Let's build the building blocks of a card to unravel .  

The parts of a card  


1. Mana cost (
top right )
 

To a card at to play pay for mana, the energy source of Magic. The mana cost is top right of the map and consists often out colored symbols ( such as {W} for white or {U} for blue ) and numbers for Generic mana. The higher the cost , the more powerful the card. usually is.  


2. Name &
illustration
 

At the top The name of the card is shown , often with a flavorful image that immediately takes you into the theme of the set. The illustration is not only atmosphere , but helps also for cards faster at recognize .  


3. Type line
 

Just below the image see the type line . Here you can read whether the card An Creature, Sorcery, Instant, Artifact, Enchantment, Land or Planeswalker . Some cards to have also subtypes, such as Elf Warrior of Aura .

Text box & abilities
 

In the text box are the rules and special card skills . This can simple keywords are such as Flying or Trample , or extended descriptions that are unique effects explain . Here you will also find flavor text – a short piece of lore that adds atmosphere gives .  


5. Power/Toughness of loyalty
 

Creatures to have a power/toughness value bottom right , for example 4/4 for Serra Angel. This gives how strongly they attack and how many damage they can to collect .

Planeswalkers have instead of which loyalty counters, with which you activate their abilities .  


6. Set
symbol &collection value
 

To the right of the text box do you see the set symbol , that indicates out which expand the map comes . The color of the symbol gives also the rarity on : black = common, silver = uncommon, gold = rare, orange /bronze = mythic rare.  


Example
 

Take Lightning Bolt , one of the most famous red spells . Top right If you see an {R}, the cost is one red mana. In the text box stands simple : “Lightning Bolt deals 3 damage to any target.” No frills , but oh so powerful this leave immediately see how clear and immediately a Magic card can are .


Negative points
 

For beginners, all that information can be a bit overwhelming at first seem . Fortunately you will soon discover patterns , and the more cards you play , the faster you read them .
